In the center of the square there is the famous column (185 feet tall) that celebrates the admiral Horatio Nelson, author of this last success, while the reliefs in bronze that they adorn the base of the column remember the others his victorious battles.

In the battle of Trafalgar, the decisive conflict among the English armies and French, it was won by the first ones, but unfortunately the admiral Horatio Nelson didn't succeed in living enough to assist to his triumph. In fact, comes on the place of the fight, at the 1.30 p.m. on 21st October, 1805, the English admiral was struck, from a French marksman that was on board of the Redoutable, who with a single hit to the shoulder lung pierced him. Before he died he learnt that the battle was won, nineteen enemy ships had struck their flags and no British ships had been lost.

On the side north of the square you can see the National Gallery. Inside this museum you can admire (free, without ticket) one of the world's richest collections of paintings, as for instance the East Wing where the paintings of Van Gogh, Monet, Manet, Degas, Renoir and so many others are entertained.

On the Trafalgar Square's northeast side there is the St. Martin rises in the Fields church; to east the South Africa House; to west we find the neoclassic building della Canada House.

Among the principal streets of the Trafalgar Square we can see The Mall that it brings to Buckingham Palace, Whitehall to the Houseses of Parliament (Big Ben) and to the 10, Downing Street, the official residence of the English Prime Minister, even if Tony Blair has broken the tradition transferring himself to the n° 11; Cross Road to Leicester Square and Haymarket to Piccadilly Circus.
